Town Hall (803)-275-2538
The town of Trenton was established in the late 1860s following the arrival of the Charlotte, Columbia, and Augusta Railroad, which helped shape the growth of this small South Carolina community. Before becoming Trenton, the area was commonly known as Pine House, a name connected to the historic “Piney Woods Tavern,” also called the Pine House, which served as a stagecoach stop for travelers passing through the region.Local history holds that George Washington stopped and dined at the Pine House in 1791 while traveling between Augusta and Columbia. Today, a historical marker near the intersection of Highways 121, 19, and 25 honors that visit and serves as a reminder of the town’s early significance.James Monroe Wise is widely recognized as the founder of Trenton. In 1870, he built the community’s first store and residence and played a key role in the village’s early development. By 1877, Trenton officially received its town charter, and the local post office adopted the name Trenton shortly afterward.A historic building once donated by the Wise family later became home to the Trenton Library and Visitors Center, reflecting the town’s commitment to preserving its heritage. Today, Trenton continues to embrace its small-town character, with residents taking pride in protecting its history, traditions, and close-knit community for future generations.
